Constance Moofushi Maldives Partners with Mars to Restore Coral Reefs

In the South Ari Atoll, where the ocean shifts from pale turquoise to unfathomable blue, Constance Moofushi Maldives has marked its 50th anniversary with substance. In a gesture aligned with the resort’s founding philosophy, that true luxury exists in harmony with the natural world, Constance Moofushi announced a landmark coral restoration initiative in partnership with Mars Sustainable Solutions (MSS), the global organisation behind the pioneering MARRS (Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System) framework.

The collaboration is both timely and symbolic. Coral ecosystems across the world are under threat, and in the Indian Ocean, a region Constance has called home for half a century, reefs form the backbone of biodiversity, community livelihood, and cultural connection. To commemorate its five decades of True Hospitality, the resort has restored over 100 square metres of reef and outplanted more than 1,500 coral fragments, re-energising an ecosystem central to the atoll’s identity.

The Science of Restoration

At the heart of the initiative lies the Reef Star: a coral-sand–coated, hexagonal steel structure designed to accelerate natural regeneration. Over two days, Constance Moofushi’s marine specialists installed 100 Reef Stars, each fitted with carefully selected coral fragments, then interconnected them to create a lattice of new life on the seabed of the resort’s house reef.

The MARRS methodology is one of the most advanced coral restoration systems globally. At MSS’s flagship site at Hope Reef in Indonesia, coral cover has increased from under 5% to more than 70%, accompanied by a 58% rise in fish species. To date, Mars and its global partners have deployed over 100,000 Reef Stars and planted more than 1.5 million coral fragments across 72 reef sites on 5 continents.

In Maldives, this design is matched by the precision and passion of the local marine team.

Long-Term Vision

“This collaboration is a powerful example of what can be achieved through long-term commitment and partnership,” shared Kate Janetski, Marine Program Lead for Maldives & Caribbean and Global Training Manager with Mars Sustainable Solutions. “Through the MARRS framework, we’re restoring coral ecosystems that will thrive for generations, while inspiring travellers to value the delicate beauty of our reefs.”

For Constance Moofushi, the initiative is not an isolated project but a continuation of a decades-long environmental ethos.

“As we mark 50 years of Constance Hotels & Resorts, we look toward the future with gratitude and responsibility,” said Mevin Ramasamy, General Manager of Constance Moofushi. “Through this partnership, we aim not only to restore coral life but to inspire our guests and team members to become active guardians of our oceans.”

A Living Tribute to 50 Years of Island Hospitality

While many destinations highlight sustainability as an amenity, Constance places it at the core of the guest experience.

Visitors who dive or snorkel near the house reef will now witness the early stages of a marine landscape coming back to life: fish populations returning, coral fragments fusing, algae retreating as the ecosystem stabilises. It is a rare opportunity to observe restoration not as an abstract idea, but as a tangible and evolving structure beneath the waterline.

Celebrating the Ocean Through Stories

To commemorate the milestone, the group launched Oceans of Stories, a digital campaign inviting travellers to share personal memories connected to the sea. Running from 11 to 25 November, the initiative highlights the emotional and cultural relationship between humans and the ocean. One participant will receive a four-night all-inclusive stay for two at Constance Moofushi, a meaningful extension of the resort’s ongoing celebration of conservation.

Conscious Indulgence

In a world where sustainability often feels performative, Constance Moofushi’s partnership with Mars Sustainable Solutions stands out as a model for the luxury sector: grounded in science, executed by trained experts, and supported by a brand whose identity is intertwined with the Indian Ocean.

Across its portfolio, from Mauritius to Seychelles, Madagascar to the Maldives, Constance Hotels & Resorts has long championed the idea of hospitality as a form of custodianship. Whether through marine research, culinary art, or curated island adventures, each property echoes a singular ethos that luxury is richer when it gives back more than it takes.
