HUAWEI Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN Remains the Trifold Benchmark

When Huawei introduced the Mate XT Ultimate Design in the summer of 2024, it shifted the trajectory of smartphone design. At a time when the industry seemed to be iterating rather than innovating, Huawei did something rare by creating an entirely new category and executing it at scale.

The Mate XT became the world’s first commercially available trifold smartphone, not as a concept piece or limited experiment, but as a fully realised device designed for daily use. More than a year later, it remains the benchmark against which every subsequent trifold device is measured.

A Device Designed for How We Live Now

The logic behind the Mate XT is simple yet ambitious. Modern life no longer fits neatly into single-use devices. Smartphones have absorbed the roles of cameras, notebooks, entertainment systems, and work tools. The Mate XT responds to this reality with a single continuous 10.2-inch display that unfolds into a tablet-like experience, then folds seamlessly back into a standard smartphone form.

Huawei’s Z-shaped folding structure is what sets the Mate XT apart. One panel folds inward, the other outward, allowing the same display to function as both the primary screen and the external interface when closed. The result is an uninterrupted visual experience that feels cohesive rather than fragmented.

Engineering That Still Leads the Market

Even with increased competition entering the trifold space, Huawei’s engineering remains difficult to match. The Mate XT continues to lead in charging speed, battery efficiency, screen resolution, and overall weight. More than a year after launch, it remains the slimmest and lightest trifold smartphone currently available.

At the core of this achievement is Huawei’s Advanced Precision Hinge System, constructed from ultra-high-strength steel. The mechanism delivers smooth, controlled movement with long-term durability, reinforcing the Mate XT’s positioning as a device built for longevity rather than novelty.

Design as a Statement

Huawei has now expanded the Mate XT line with a white vegan leather finish, joining the original red and black options. The new colourway introduces a more minimalist expression of the device, aligning with a growing preference for understated luxury in personal technology.

A Category Still Defined by Its Originator

While other manufacturers have begun exploring trifold formats, the Mate XT remains the reference point. Its balance of form, function, and engineering clarity has yet to be surpassed.

The Mate XT Ultimate Design is not simply a foldable device taken one step further. It represents a rethinking of what a smartphone can be when design follows behaviour rather than trends. More than a year on, the Mate XT is still not being chased; it is being studied.
