Kia PV5 WKNDR Concept Wins Silver Award at 2025 IDEA

Kia has added another accolade to its design portfolio with the PV5 WKNDR Concept receiving a Silver Award at the 2025 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). Recognised in the Automotive and Transportation category, the award highlights the concept’s innovative approach to modular design, sustainability, and the brand’s forward-looking design philosophy.

The Adventure Vehicle

The PV5 WKNDR Concept is part of Kia’s new Purpose Built Vehicle (PBV) line, created to adapt seamlessly to different lifestyles. Central to its design is a modular interior that can be customised for a wide range of uses — from recreational escapes to everyday practicality.

A standout feature is the “Gear Head,” an off-board storage system that extends outside the vehicle when parked. It provides sheltered space for gear, equipment, or even doubles as a mobile pantry, turning outdoor spaces into functional kitchens with a view. This flexible design ensures that interior space remains optimised while still supporting active lifestyles.

Built for Self-Sufficiency

The WKNDR was envisioned as a fully self-sufficient vehicle. Solar panels integrated into the design help recharge the battery in remote areas, while its hydro turbine wheels can generate additional energy in off-road or water-based environments. Inside, sustainability is a key theme: Nike Grind flooring, made from recycled sneakers, is one of several eco-friendly materials incorporated into the design, underscoring Kia’s commitment to reducing environmental impact without compromising aesthetics.

A Recognition of Global Design

Karim Habib, Head of Kia Global Design, said the recognition reflects the strength of Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy. “Recognition from IDEA is a great honour, demonstrating the impact and value of Kia’s vision in guiding our future design direction. Awards such as this not only acknowledge the work of our global design teams but also encourage us to continue creating products that are both relevant and meaningful for customers.”

The IDEA accolade places Kia alongside other globally significant brands and reinforces its competitiveness in the international design space.

What is the IDEA Award?

The International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) is one of the three most respected global design competitions, alongside the iF Design and Red Dot Awards. For nearly 50 years, IDEA has recognised innovations that combine design excellence with societal benefit. Organised by the Industrial Designers Society of America, the awards are judged by more than 40 multidisciplinary experts from around the world.

Assessment criteria go beyond aesthetics to include user benefit, brand value, and contribution to society — ensuring that winning products stand out not only for their visual identity but also for the depth of their impact. Past winners include influential designs across automotive, technology, healthcare, and consumer goods.

Kia’s Global Ambitions

Founded in 1944, Kia has grown into a global mobility brand present in more than 190 markets, with around three million vehicles sold annually. Beyond its traditional automotive business, Kia is investing heavily in electrified vehicles, purpose-built mobility solutions, and sustainable technologies that align with its brand slogan: Movement that inspires.

The success of the PV5 WKNDR Concept at IDEA 2025 signals more than a design milestone. It reflects the direction Kia is taking — combining sustainability, adaptability, and innovation — to meet the evolving expectations of customers worldwide.
